Here is an essay that I wrote a while back that is more vital today than ever!

It’s such a cliche that change is the only constant, but change is difficult because it means all the things that you have come to take for granted may no longer work in your business or personal life.  Reinventing yourself has never been more critical to your success.

So here are 5 steps to reinventing yourself:

1. Awareness

How aware are you about your industry?  There are trends in every industry and the easiest way to find out is to ask people how they see the future.  Are you reading? Are you watching? Are you asking?  In the health care industry, we must take a proactive approach to maintain awareness of what is going on.  So open your eyes to what “is” and not what “should be.”

2.  Step out of your comfort range

If there is something that you want or need, trust yourself and accept any fear that you may have.  Do you want to change jobs?  Do you want to go back to school?  Do you have an idea that you would like to offer to your boss or to the world?  Fear is powerful, but so is success.  Fortune favors the bold.

3.  Accept the possiblilty of rejection

Rejection is a powerful emotion that most people simply cannot tolerate.  Why not convince yourself that rejection is a part of life no different than the seasons.  Rejection can feel personal, but it rarely is.  If you are a sales person, rejection is built into the equation of your job.  But in reality, rejection only means that you have to maintain persistence until acceptance.  Acceptance can be just around the corner.

4.  Trust yourself

This migh be the most important aspect to self reinvention.  Look back at your accomplishments in life and break it down into smaller decisions that you had to make along the line.  All accomplishments are achieved with some element of self trust.  Believe that you are able to accomplish the things that you want to do for yourself.  It is not necessary or even appropriate to share your dreams with anyone who might disagree and try to talk you out of it.  Belief in a possible outcome can only come from trusting yourself.

5.  Take action today

What are you waiting for?  Reinvent yourself a little bit each day.  Read something that might help.  Ask for someone’s opinion.  Make one phone call to find out the information you need.

Do at least one thing every single day that moves you closer to your dream.  The race isn’t won by the fastest man, it’s one by the man who thinks he can.
