How CEOs Can Help in Recruiting Elusive Talent

It’s common knowledge that for the most part, people either stay or leave their job based on their boss.

Of course there are so many other factors in the reasons why people change jobs. but ultimately it ‘s about being happy with a boss or a company.

That is why the CEO of any organization should be immensely involved in recruiting the best available talent.  The CEO is the “power command control” to the organization.

Imagine the following (and this is quite common by the way) :  a much coveted candidate is open to exploring a new opportunity and has decided to interview with a new organization.  Here is how the process typically gets played out:

  • A Human Resource person reads the resume and likes the candidate’s background.
  • HR calls the applicant to pre- screen.
  • HR sets up an interview for the applicant to meet with a member of the hiring team (a Manager, a Director.)
  • Interview takes place.
  • Assuming everything goes well and everyone is happy perhaps a 2nd interview occurs.
  • Reference checks are conducted.
  • An offer is extended.
  • If the candidate is elusive, than the waiting begins for a decision to be made.

At the offer stage, most candidates should have a pretty good idea whether or not they will accept an offer.

What was just described is very typical in most organizations.

The one thing usually missing is the personal involvement of the CEO in the process.

The CEO is the best sales tool of any organization in the acquisition of talent.

In 2004 Peter Drucker is quoted to have said: “The CEO is the link between the Inside that is ‘the organization,’ and the Outside of society, economy, technology, markets, and customers. Inside there are only costs. Results are only on the outside.”

In addition to all the responsibilities of a CEO, the main responsibility is to create and move forward the vision of an organization.

Most organizations are a direct reflection of their leadership.

Why not bring in the CEO of an organization to help “close the deal” with recruiting talent, especially elusive talent?

Most candidates are extremely flattered that a CEO would take the time to personally meet and to discuss the opportunity to work for the organization, to dispel any concerns that an elusive candidate may have.

The power of a CEO is immense and this power used in a personal way, can be very enticing in the recruitment process of top talent.  No offense to HR or other Senior Management, but the CEO is the deal closer.

In summary, the companies with the best talent have the best chance to dominate and be successful in whatever industry.  People want to work for organizations that they like and feel good about.

The power of the CEO in personally assisting in the recruitment process just might be the single most effective sales tool in the acquisition of the best talent.
