Employers: Are You Asleep At The Wheel? by Bernie Reifkind

As a busy healthcare executive you probably spend a great deal of your time navigating your operation hopefully towards a healthy profit.

I am sure that you are working long hours, answering tons of emails, questions, interruptions, justifications, ………and on and on and on.  You rarely take vacations and you are pouring your heart and soul into your work.

Then suddenly you “wake up” and realize that maybe things aren’t going as well as you had hoped.

You look around at the employees that you have hired and you come to the realization that you may have made some hiring mistakes or things have changed operationally…….however you have the wrong employees!

Asleep at the wheel? Maybe.

Let me pose this: How different would your operation be if you were staffed with other faces with better abilities and stronger commitments to your goals?

Big, and you know it.

Think about it.  Look around right now and just imagine how much better things might be with the very best available people in your key positions.  People with talent, smarts and good old fashioned character.

Maybe it’s time to breathe new life into the body of your operation, shake things up a bit and get back on the right track.  Things change, but some of your people do not.  Some people are not adept at the only constant thing: change.

Here is a suggestion: maybe it’s time to start holding your staff more accountable for the task at hand.  If they cannot adapt and improve then maybe it is “hasta la vista” time.

You do not need to be held hostage to any employee, in fact you are doing yourself a huge injustice by not having the best people in your employ.  Make some changes. Right now.

If need be, conduct a quiet search to replace someone who is underperforming.  When you find the right person, pull the plug.  Put someone new in a key position.  New people bring new energy and new excitement not only to your operation,  but to you.

Wake up.
