As America discusses the possibility of a national health care plan, many bright people have concluded that a large part of the discussion should be about wellness planning.

Do you have a career wellness plan?  Here are 5 steps to a successful program:

Step 1: Map the day in advance
What are the 3 most important tasks that you would like to accomplish today?  This is crucial to the wellness of your career.  Taking the small steps to accomplish what is truly important today will lead to the career accomplishments tomorrow and beyond.

Step 2: Never stop learning about your industry (assisted living, skilled nursing, health care)
Absorb everything you can about your industry, things are changing and it is important for you to be current as well as fluent.  Be a sponge and absorb it all in. Find and consult with successful professionals.  What are the potential opportunities that might be available given your skill set?

Step 3: Pay attention to your work habits
What time of the day are you at your peak performance?  Try and be the most effective during your peak hours.  Are you paying attention to the things that matter, rather than just doing the busy work? It’s not about quantity; it’s about the quality of your work.  Can you quantify your results?

Step 4: Take mind breaks
Successful people have difficulty saying no to more and more tasks.  If you find your self overwhelmed with absolutely necessary responsibilities, take a few minutes at least 3 times a day to “push pause” in my mind.  Try to take a break from the noise of the world.  Here is a start: turn off the screen of your computer for a few minutes and you will be amazed at the rest that your busy mind will appreciate.

Step 5: Seek support
Face it, you do not have the answers to the universe.  No one does.  In addition, you cannot anticipate all of the dynamics related to your work.  So if you find yourself in a position where you hit the wall, seek support.  You will be amazed at the support available to you from well meaning individuals.  Asking for support is not a measure of weakness; it is an act of intelligence.
